Jamaican Motivational Speaker Rickardo Witter inspires the world with his story

For Rickardo Witter, completing his studies at the University of the West Indies, Mona, was a bittersweet moment. While he is elated to have received his bachelor of science degree in marketing, he wishes that his mother, Donna Lewis, was alive to celebrate his success.

Rickardo Witter grew up in Linstead Saint Catherine Jamaica with his mother Donna Lewis while his father was living in Saint Elizabeth Jamaica which is about three hours from Saint Catherine if you’re not taking public transportation so most of his childhood was spent living with his mom while he would visit his Dad from time to time. His mom was a cook in the linstead market but lost her sight because of diabetes in 2008. At that time Witter was 13 years of age and decided to become a street vendor in the farmers market in Jamaica where he sold bag juices and ice to the fish vendors in the market. He developed toughness and determination despite his circumstances to make it work with the help of God, Rickardo said he is a firm believer in Christ and he believes his determination came from his faith and from working with his mom in the Linstead market. His mom passed two years after she became visually impaired as her other organs started to fail. Witter used his mothers death as motivation to pass all his classes in order to matriculate to university and university for Witter was another uphill battle where he started the university of technology and stayed in the library in order to go to school because he couldn’t afford housing so he decided to quit and start over at the university of the west indies.

HAD NO MONEY

At UWI, Witter had no money to enroll into the programme, and he neither took student loan nor applied for grants or scholarships. The only funding he received was in his first year, $50,000JMD (approx.300 USD) donated by his church. This was just 25 per cent payment of his tuition for the year.

He made money for himself as a personal trainer at the UWI gym, training students between his classes. He was qualified to do so after attending the National Aerobics and Fitness Trainers Association in 2017 and earning a certificate in nutrition from the Health Sciences Academy.

Rickardo Witter’s aim is to inspire people globally through motivational speaking to let them know that whatever situation they are in they can emerge as the victor, they can do great things through Christ who strengthens them and don’t be afraid to share their story and to make their story become their glory
